Apple WWDC 2026: Tim Cook Unveils AI Strategy on His Final Stage
Apple's annual flagship event, WWDC 2026, opened on June 8 (local time) at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. CEO Tim Cook, who has led Apple for 15 years, took the official stage ahead of his retirement this September.
The event featured the unveiling of Apple's new artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. The key highlight was the introduction of 'Siri AI,' reborn with the integration of Google's Gemini model. Siri, which had been burdened with the nickname 'stupid Siri' since 2011, has been transformed into a standalone chatbot capable of fluid conversation through text and voice. Bloomberg reported that the new Siri appears at the top of the Dynamic Island, features a 'multistep' capability to handle multiple tasks at once, and offers email drafting assistance. Its visual intelligence feature, which analyzes food nutrition labels in conjunction with the camera app and automatically syncs them to users' diet tracking apps, garnered significant market attention.
Apple's AI endeavors have not been smooth. Following the unveiling of 'Apple Intelligence' in 2024, the company faced criticism for frequent launch delays and underwhelming features. At this year's WWDC 2024, Apple sought a turnaround by showcasing 'Siri AI' powered by Google's Gemini model.
UBS rated the new Siri as the 'best interface on-device.' Gabelli Funds expressed confidence, calling 'Personalized Siri a powerful killer service that will captivate billions of iPhone users.' Apple has maintained a strategy of building 'the best interface' rather than developing its own large language models (LLMs). BofA commented on Apple's strategy, stating, 'There is no need to own the world's best model; one just needs to own the 'most trusted interface' that consumers touch every moment.' Evercore ISI evaluated Apple's true strength as its 'overwhelming distribution power' among its 1.25 billion iPhone users. Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, emphasized user experience control and security, stating, 'Apple's next-generation AI system is not simply powered by Google Search or external engines.'
The new operating system, 'iOS 18,' was unveiled, improving smartphone performance and fixing bugs to increase app launch speeds by 30%. The upcoming 'iPhone 18' lineup and the preview of a 'foldable iPhone' signaled comprehensive changes across software and hardware. Analysis suggests that a minimum of 12GB of memory will be essential for running on-device AI features. This is expected to pressure existing iPhone users to upgrade, driving hardware sales growth.
Bernstein Research forecasts that if AI features accelerate the iPhone upgrade cycle, Apple's earnings per share (EPS) could increase by 13%, with an additional 16% rise possible if premium AI features are monetized in the future.
Despite positive market reception, Apple's stock fell 2% on the day. Investor disappointment was triggered by the announcement that AI features would not be immediately available in the EU and China markets, regions with high regulatory barriers. Wall Street experts advised against being overly concerned by the short-term dip.
Tim Cook's 15-year tenure as CEO has been evaluated as a 'tremendous success' financially. Barron's noted that CEO Cook successfully demonstrated his AI roadmap and next-generation strategy on his retirement stage, honorably passing the baton to incoming CEO John Ternus in September.
