ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan Suspended Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has had his duties temporarily suspended due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Following the discovery of some disciplinary evidence, Khan's future will be determined by a vote of the ICC member states. According to foreign media reports from Reuters, AP, and others, the ICC has confirmed some evidence of Khan's inappropriate conduct, initiating disciplinary proceedings and suspending him from his duties.
Khan is accused of placing an employee from another department in his own office and then accompanying them on official trips, engaging in inappropriate sexual contact. A report was also filed alleging sexual harassment of a female intern during his practice as a British lawyer in 2009. The UN's Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), after an 18-month investigation, confirmed evidence that Khan attempted non-consensual sexual contact at his office and home.
Khan's legal team has protested, stating that no illegal acts occurred. The ICC can dismiss the prosecutor through a secret ballot by its 125 member states, requiring a majority of 63 votes or more at the Assembly of States Parties.
