National Assembly Debates 'Working Parliament' vs. 'Shorts Parliament'
The People Power Party has demanded the return of the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, protesting the notification of the deadline for submitting standing committee member lists. This highlights the deepening conflict between the ruling and opposition parties over the operation of the National Assembly and the distribution of power.
Jeong Jin-sik, the People Power Party's floor leader, stated at a party meeting at the National Assembly on the morning of the 23rd, "To create a working parliament, not one that films 'shorts,' and to restore normal parliamentary operations, the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee must be returned to our party." He criticized the Democratic Party's operation of the committee, pointing out that the DP monopolized the Speaker and the Legislation and Judiciary Committee chairmanship in the first half of the 22nd National Assembly, breaking with precedent. The People Power Party claims that the DP unilaterally passed 191 bills in the first half of the 22nd National Assembly.
Kim Tae-gyu, the People Power Party's chief spokesperson, commented on Assembly Speaker Cho's notification of committee member list submission, stating that if it leads to justifying the Democratic Party's monopolization of standing committees, it would essentially grant a license for the DP's unilateral actions rather than normalizing the parliament. He emphasized that the National Assembly Speaker's role is not to represent the interests of a specific party but to uphold the fairness and balance of the parliament.
