AMD Acquires AI Chip Startup Taalas

AMD has signed an agreement to acquire Taalas, a startup developing artificial intelligence (AI) chips for inference. According to a report by CNBC on the 6th (local time), AMD announced plans to integrate Taalas's chips and technology into its roadmap, offering them alongside systems equipped with its CPUs and GPUs.

Taalas produces custom chips embedded in hardware tailored for specific AI models and has secured a total of $219 million in venture funding since its establishment in 2023. The company claims to offer affordable chips capable of generating outputs for specific models thousands of times faster than existing graphics processing units, and currently possesses technology to run a smaller version of Meta's Llama 3.1 model.

This acquisition highlights the growing importance for major graphics processing unit manufacturers to offer integrated systems comprising multiple components and chips, rather than just processors, CNBC reported. The Taalas acquisition is seen as part of AMD's recent aggressive M&A activity in the AI sector, with the company having expanded its business areas by successively acquiring AI model development firm Silo AI and server solutions company Cetas Systems in 2024.
