Android Earthquake Alerts Helped 11.4 Million Evacuate

Approximately 11.4 million Android phone users in Venezuela were able to detect tremors in advance and prepare thanks to Google's earthquake early warning system before a major earthquake struck. In the absence of a national early earthquake warning system, smartphones detected the initial seismic waves (P-waves) and alerted people seconds in advance.

Google's Android Earthquake Alert System utilizes sensor data from over 2 billion smartphones. It detects initial vibrations when an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or greater occurs and sends notifications to mobile phones in affected areas. Google Senior Engineering Manager Mark Stopaitytis stated that the system detected the initial P-waves just 3 seconds after the first earthquake in Venezuela and sent out the first alerts 6 seconds later. Approximately 1.4 million 'immediate response' alerts were sent to residents in the hardest-hit areas.

This system operates wherever smartphones are used, providing a few seconds' warning before strong shaking (S-waves) arrives, thus helping to reduce damage. This is not earthquake prediction technology; it represents a technological trend distinct from existing monitoring networks centered on conventional observation equipment, leveraging Android phones which account for about 70% of smartphones globally.
