DP Pushes Through Unilateral Election of 18 Committee Chairs

The Democratic Party (DP) proceeded with the process of unilaterally electing the 18 standing committee chair positions at the National Assembly on June 30. This decision came amid the collapse of negotiations for the formation of the second half of the 22nd National Assembly's committees.

Negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties for the committee assignments of the second half of the 22nd National Assembly encountered difficulties over the issue of allocating the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-sik requested the People Power Party's (PPP) opinions on committee assignments by noon on June 30, but the PPP opposed this, labeling it a unilateral distribution process.

The National Assembly is scheduled to hold a plenary session on the afternoon of June 30 to begin the procedure for electing the standing committee chairs.
