Crypto Assets Worth $16 Billion Vanish, Poor Private Key Management Blamed

Assets worth 22 trillion won have disappeared from the global cryptocurrency market. The total estimated damage from global cryptocurrency hacks has reached $16 billion (approximately 22 trillion won), with a significant portion attributed to vulnerabilities or theft of private keys.

Experts analyze that the primary cause of these losses is not an issue with blockchain technology itself, but rather users failing to properly manage the 'private keys' that unlock their cryptocurrency wallets and protect their assets. Many investors have long considered security vulnerabilities in smart contracts, blockchain-based financial transaction agreements, as a major threat. However, hackers have actually focused on attacking private key storage servers, which are relatively easier to steal, instead of performing complex source code analysis. Phishing and malware distribution were also major methods targeting private keys. Once a private key is leaked, hackers can impersonate legitimate owners and transfer assets from a wallet without any restrictions.

Wiesh U, co-founder and CEO of blockchain infrastructure firm Paros, stated that while the digital asset industry is making multifaceted efforts to resolve the issue of private key vulnerabilities, the level and speed of response vary greatly by region and company. The industry is currently moving to adopt technologies beyond the traditional reliance on a single private key, such as 'multi-signature' technology which manages assets in a divided manner, or 'multi-party computation' (MPC) which splits a single key into multiple pieces for storage. However, small and medium-sized exchanges and individual investors, citing cost and convenience, still adhere to traditional single-key storage methods, making them targets for hackers.

Security experts pointed out that asset evaporation due to private key leaks could repeat in the future if clear security guidelines and institutional safeguards are not established by regulatory authorities. Resolving the security gap across the entire blockchain ecosystem and building standardized key management infrastructure has emerged as the most urgent task for the global cryptocurrency market.
