Tesla Crashes Into California Cafe, Killing One
A Tesla vehicle crashed into a cafe's outdoor seating area in Simi Valley, California, resulting in one fatality and five injuries. The incident occurred the previous afternoon at a Simi Valley shopping center. The driver of the Tesla SUV was identified as a 64-year-old woman. Four children were also passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The Simi Valley Police Department is investigating potential causes including mechanical failure, alcohol, or drug use, but has not yet reached a conclusion. It has not been confirmed whether Tesla's advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) was engaged during the crash.
This incident follows a crash in Texas ten days prior. On the 19th, a Tesla vehicle, reportedly using the 'Autopilot' function, crashed into a house, killing a woman in her 70s. While the deceased's family has filed a lawsuit against the driver and Tesla, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched special crash investigations into these incidents. Tesla has claimed that Autopilot was disengaged in the Texas accident because the driver had pressed the accelerator pedal.
