Busan City Council's Democratic Party Withdraws from Leadership Election Race
The Democratic Party has decided to withdraw from primary elections for the 10th Busan City Council's leadership and standing committee chair positions, opting instead to unanimously support the People Power Party's candidates.
The 10th Busan City Council operates under a minority-party-majority structure, with the People Power Party holding 37 out of 48 seats and the Democratic Party securing 11 seats.
The 11 Democratic Party council members held an emergency general meeting on July 3rd and resolved to have all their registered candidates for the Speaker election, as well as the Maritime Affairs and Safety Committee Chair and Construction and Transportation Committee Chair elections, withdraw their candidacies. In line with the consensus nomination approach, the Democratic Party also decided not to accept the council's second deputy speaker position, which the People Power Party had offered to allocate to them.
As a result, the 10th Busan City Council is scheduled to elect its leadership and standing committee chairs during its first plenary session on July 6th.
