Lawmaker Ju Jin-woo Announces Plans for Constitutional Challenge Against SNS Censorship Bill
People Power Party lawmaker Ju Jin-woo announced on the 4th that he will file a constitutional lawsuit against the revised Information and Communications Network Act, scheduled to take effect on the 7th. Through Facebook, Ju described the bill as the 'Nation's Gag Bill' and criticized it for being hastily pushed through without an agency to judge false or manipulated information.
He also argued that the law violates constitutional principles, including the prohibition of prior restraint, the principle of proportionality, freedom of press and expression, and freedom of thought and conscience.
The revised Information and Communications Network Act designates information that incites violence or discrimination, or promotes hatred based on race, nationality, region, gender, disability, age, social status, income level, or wealth status as illegal information. The Korea Communications Standards Commission plans to strengthen its review and response to discriminatory and hate speech online.
