Kim So-young Claims She Cannot Afford Damages, Calls Demand for Parental Liability Unjust in Handwritten Defense

Kim So-young, 20, currently on trial for suspected drug-induced murder, has requested a reduction in the damages sought by the victim's family, stating that she "cannot repay the amount even if she works for a lifetime." The victim's family filed a civil suit seeking 30 million won in damages against Kim So-young and her parents last year. In a handwritten statement submitted to the court, Kim argued that holding her parents liable for a crime she committed as an adult is unjust, asserting that civil liability should be limited to herself and her father.

In an opinion statement submitted to the criminal court, Kim denied having any intent to kill. She stated that she was shocked when she first learned of the victim's death at the time of her arrest. She testified that she had handed over drugs to stop the sexual assault and expressed regret over her actions.

The 14th Criminal Division of the Seoul Northern District Court (Presiding Judge Oh Byeong-hee) held the fourth hearing on the 14th. Kim So-young's next trial is scheduled for the 23rd.
