Ham Yang-ah Unveils New Work 'Undefined Panorama' in Seoul

Ham Yang-ah's (58) solo exhibition, 'Undefined Panorama,' opened on the 31st of last month at the Art Sonje Center in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The exhibition introduces two new video installation pieces utilizing monitors and spatial setups, alongside a series of works inspired by the Sewol Ferry incident. The exhibition runs until October 4.

The new piece 'Undefined Panorama 4.0' (2026) features an eight-channel video installation on a circular screen and runs for 22 minutes. It begins with footage of surging seas and actual burial scenes, transitions into funeral processions and vast social landscapes, and concludes by returning to the sea. The work intersects grand narratives—such as the rise of neoliberalism in the late 1970s, globalization, the digital revolution, and the climate crisis—with microscopic aspects of life like birth, funerals, daily routines, and labor. Ham Yang-ah explained that the piece poses questions about how human behavior is converted into data-providing labor for AI in the context of the artificial intelligence era.

Another new work, 'The Listening Speaker, The Speaking Other' (2026), is an installation featuring online self-portraits submitted by people from around the world.
