Japan is set to introduce its own artificial intelligence (AI) into the Self-Defense Forces' command system. This move aims to establish an AI system based on domestic technology to support commanders' decision-making in the modern warfare environment. Japan's Ministry of Defense has determined that in light of advancements in cutting-edge technology observed in conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, it is crucial to enhance decision-making capabilities by rapidly processing vast amounts of data, and has been exploring AI integration through the establishment of a dedicated team.

Japan had initially considered adopting a system from U.S. company Palantir but shifted its direction to adopting its own AI, citing concerns such as maintaining confidentiality. Sakana AI, a startup and a strong candidate, offers the command system 'Fugu,' which is expected to be utilized in conjunction with overseas cutting-edge AI. Notably, in a bid to secure 'AI sovereignty,' Japan plans to exclude Chinese models from defense services, mindful of past instances where Chinese open-source models were used, and will exclusively employ Japanese nationals for its development team.

The Japanese government plans to accelerate its response to 'new combat methods' by adopting domestic AI, materialize its 'AI sovereignty' policy of autonomous management of data and systems, and enhance its technological competitiveness in modern warfare.
