Won/Dollar Rate Enters 1,400 Range: Implications for Households and Markets

In August 2026, the won/dollar exchange rate fell to 1,415 won based on month-end figures. The rate, which had risen to 1,542 won in June, dropped by 127 won over two months. Even looking at the recent five-month period, it is 61 won lower than the late-April figure of 1,476 won. With a decline of approximately 8.2% from the yearly high, assessments suggest the exchange rate has effectively settled in the early 1,400-won range.

Two Months of Sharp Decline Following June Peak

The trend shows a clear divergence between the rise and fall. Starting at 1,476 won in April, the rate rose for three consecutive months to 1,506 won in May and 1,542 won in June, crossing the 1,500-won threshold. However, the trend reversed in July. It dropped by 101 won in a single month to 1,441 won at the end of July, and in August, it recorded a further decline of 26 won to 1,415 won.

The fact that the decline exceeded 100 won over two months is significant in terms of volatility. Compared to the monthly average increase of about 33 won during the upward period, the downward speed was more than twice as fast. A rapid decline in the exchange rate typically occurs when factors for a weak dollar and a strong won operate simultaneously, and this time is interpreted as being driven by improvements in domestic and foreign interest rates and supply-demand conditions.

Impact of Falling Exchange Rates on Households and Businesses

The 1,415-won level is directly felt by households. As the exchange rate fell by 127 won from its June peak, the burden of dollar payments for overseas travel, study abroad, and direct overseas purchases has visibly decreased. For example, while settling $1,000 required about 1.54 million won in June, it now requires about 1.41 million won, a difference of about 130,000 won.

The strong won also acts positively regarding import prices. As the cost of imported raw materials like oil and grains, which are traded in dollars, falls in won terms, corporate cost burdens are alleviated, which could lead to stable consumer prices. Conversely, export companies face a burden as the amount received when converting dollar-denominated sales into won decreases. In particular, sectors with high export proportions, such as semiconductors and automobiles, must assess the scale of foreign exchange losses.

Investors need to review their asset allocation. During periods of exchange rate decline, the won value of dollar assets decreases, so portfolios with high proportions of dollar deposits or U.S. stocks may need to revisit their currency hedging strategies. It is also worth noting that this could act as a factor for foreign capital inflow into the domestic stock market. As the value of the won stabilizes, the exchange rate risk burden for foreign investors decreases, raising expectations for improved supply and demand in the domestic market.

Whether the Rate Settles at 1,400 Won is Key

The remaining variable is the sustainability of the decline. While the rate has already fallen below 1,420 won, the possibility of a rebound remains due to the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate policy direction, international oil prices, and trade balance trends. Given that the exchange rate has repeatedly risen and fallen over the past five months, a response premised on a fluctuating range—rather than assuming a long-term, one-way trend—is safer.

However, the trend itself is leaning towards a stronger won. This is backed by two consecutive months of decline, an expansion in the monthly decline, and a double-digit percentage drop from the yearly high. For households, it has become advantageous to advance overseas spending plans, while export companies are advised to take defensive measures, such as adjusting the proportion of currency hedging. Whether the exchange rate holds the 1,400-won line depends on dollar supply and demand and external indicators over the coming weeks.
