Rally Stumbles Amid Surging FX and Oil Prices... Semiconductor-Focused Strategy Put to the Test

As Seoul and New York markets fell in tandem on the 15th, the 'AI Value Investing Portfolio' maintained its footing above the $40,000 mark despite a 1.29% surge in the won-dollar exchange rate and 3.87% volatility in WTI crude oil, posting a cumulative return of +41.86%. However, it is worth noting that the portfolio has entered a correction phase, with assets shrinking about 7% over the past five days, from $15,258 to $14,186.

A 7% Pullback From Peak, But the Trend Remains Strong

The portfolio's assets climbed from $15,163 on the 9th to an intraday high of $15,258 on the 10th, then declined for three consecutive days. This was the result of mounting short-term profit-taking pressure, driven by a 0.85% drop in the KOSPI and a 0.78% slide in the Nasdaq, compounded by uncertainty over Intel's outlook and heightened volatility in leveraged products. Still, the return of over 40% on initial capital significantly outpaces market returns. There is ample room to read this correction not as the end of the rally, but as a process of releasing overheating.

The portfolio's core holding is NVIDIA. With earnings per share of $7.91 against a P/E of 26.7, its growth-adjusted valuation metric stands at just 0.46, suggesting the stock price is lagging behind its earnings growth. AMD has surged nearly 2.5x from its purchase price to become the main driver of gains, but its high 126.5 P/E and low EPS of $3.90 mean future earnings validation will be key. Micron, by contrast, is the most 'value-oriented' holding, boasting a 20.9 P/E, solid EPS of $44.28, and a growth-adjusted valuation of 0.14. Intel remains loss-making (EPS of -$2.09), rendering valuation metrics ineffective, but as a recovery play betting on the rebound of the AI supply chain, it must be approached through its narrative rather than its numbers.

The core of the past month's trading pattern has been 'scaled selling of SOXL.' After accumulating shares at $114 in late July, the portfolio sold off small amounts each week while the semiconductor index remained strong, realizing gains and redirecting the proceeds into individual stocks such as Intel and NVIDIA. This is a classic risk-management approach that reduces the volatility risk of leveraged products while maintaining upward momentum. That said, SOXL's current price of $101 is well below its recent peak, leaving some regret that the scaled selling could have come a bit sooner. Trimming TQQQ was likewise a sector-concentration choice based on the judgment that semiconductor valuations are more attractive than the Nasdaq as a whole.

Outlook: The Variables Posed by Oil Prices and FX Rates

In the short term, caution is warranted as surging oil prices and a rising exchange rate stoke fears of resurgent inflation. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield's climb to near 5% has increased valuation pressure on growth stocks, and with the VIX moving at low levels, a sudden spike in volatility cannot be ruled out. However, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index's 0.4% gain a day earlier, along with rising Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 futures, suggests the correction may be temporary. This semiconductor-focused portfolio, built around growth-adjusted undervalued stocks, should maintain its direction, but a defensive stance through managing leveraged exposure and securing cash will remain effective for the time being.
