Democrats Urge Release of Bodycam Footage After ICE Shooting in Austin

A man was shot and injured by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Austin, Texas, on Sunday. Austin police said they were not involved in the shooting and only assisted with traffic control.

Shortly after the incident, a Democratic lawmaker called for the release of bodycam footage worn by police and an independent investigation. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said he was "extremely angry and deeply frustrated," criticizing ICE for creating fear and confusion in Austin and other cities. He questioned the decision to let ICE investigate the incident itself without the involvement of local investigative agencies. Mayor Watson urged the public not to jump to conclusions based on early claims circulating on social media platforms such as TikTok and X.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the police department's special investigations unit and the Texas Rangers would conduct a joint investigation into the incident. "The citizens of Austin deserve answers. We will answer every question and handle this with as much transparency as possible," she said. Chief Davis added, however, that she had not yet received a briefing from federal authorities.

After news of the incident spread, protesters gathered near the scene as night fell and clashed with authorities. Footage of the scene captured people waving flags and holding up their mobile phones.
