Driver in His 60s Arrested After Truck Plows Into Flea Market

A man in his 60s who drove a cargo truck into a flea market in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, injuring multiple people, has been placed under arrest. An arrest warrant is a court order detaining a suspect when there are concerns about flight or evidence destruction.

Over the weekend, a one-ton cargo truck driven by a man in his 60s plowed into a flea market (charity sharing) event being held at a children's park in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. The crash killed a mother in her 40s who was volunteering at the event along with her middle school son, and left five others injured.

When the driver appeared for his warrant hearing and was asked by reporters whether he acknowledged the charges, he apologized to the bereaved family, saying, "I am sorry. I have nothing to say." He initially stated immediately after the crash that he had made a pedal error, then claimed sudden unintended acceleration, before reportedly admitting fault again, saying he "seems to have stepped on the accelerator by mistake."

The court issued the arrest warrant, citing that the criminal charges were substantiated, the victims were numerous, and the suspect posed a flight risk given the gravity of the offense.

At the memorial set up at the accident site, chrysanthemums were laid in honor of the late mother and son, and condolence ribbons hung in a row along the police line. Mourners continue to visit the memorial altar for citizens. Yoon Hye-kyung, who had volunteered alongside the late mother, said, "She was such a warm person who did so much volunteer work," adding, "It is heartbreaking that this happened to her while she arrived early to prepare for the volunteer event." The family is known to have volunteered together for four years. A joint memorial altar honoring the victims will operate through the 23rd.
