Driver Caught Speeding at 157 km/h, Committing 22 Traffic Violations in 10 Minutes of Reckless High-Speed Driving

Mr. A, 52, was arrested by Gangwon Provincial Police on charges of driving at 157 km/h — 77 km/h over the 80 km/h speed limit — along National Route 44 in Jumchi-ri, Hwacheon-myeon, Hongcheon County, Gangwon Province, at around 3 p.m. during the Chuseok holiday, committing 22 traffic violations over about 10 minutes. He is being investigated on charges of reckless driving under the Road Traffic Act.

Police spotted Mr. A, who was driving a Grandeur sedan, tailgating the vehicle ahead without keeping a safe distance and repeatedly switching lanes without signaling — a maneuver known as 'kalchigi' (tailgating and cutting) — and chased him down, arresting him at the scene. On the road with an 80 km/h speed limit, Mr. A reached speeds of up to 157 km/h, and was found to have driven at 140 km/h or above on 31 occasions.

During questioning, Mr. A reportedly told police, "My daughter in Wonju was sick, which is why I broke traffic laws." Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.
