Robot AI breakthroughs are still far from transforming everyday life

Despite advances in AI, an analysis finds robots are still far from changing everyday life. In an article published on the 8th, MIT Technology Review pointed out that many challenges remain before robots can understand situations and move the way humans do.

Footage shows a humanoid robot with a white body and a black head and upper body dancing, handing out popcorn, and taking out the trash and cleaning. The robot is Tesla's Optimus. However, the same footage also captured the robot falling over while distributing water bottles and struggling with ironing (Tesla's released video).

Industry expectations are running high. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said this year that humanoid robots will reach human-level capabilities. Morgan Stanley estimates that humanlike robots will number around 1 billion by 2050, creating a market worth more than $5 trillion.

Amid such expectations and forecasts, MIT Technology Review offered a cautious view, noting that the key question is whether the techniques driving recent AI progress will enable robots to navigate the world like humans, or whether an entirely new path is needed — and that a transformation of everyday life will take more time.
