Google is set to increase the number of source links in its AI search answers. On Monday (local time), Google announced in a blog post that it will place source links higher up and more frequently in its AI search answers ("AI Overviews" and "AI Mode"). The update applies to AI Overviews, where AI summarizes multiple sources at the top of search results, and AI Mode, a search feature where AI responds conversationally to questions. Google explained the goal is to let users go directly to the original source of the information they need within an answer.

The company also disclosed details of how the change will work. For tasks or information that do not require many reference sites, relevant links will appear at the top of the answer along with context. This allows users to check related sites first without scrolling all the way through a summarized answer. For time-sensitive content, Google will expand the scope of the "link carousel" introduced in May, and links at the bottom of answers will be redesigned with image thumbnails to encourage clicks. In AI Mode, Google is also testing links that lead to search profiles of publishers and creators.

AI Overviews and AI Mode deliver tailored answers directly without going through a traditional search results page. Accordingly, Google is adjusting its screen layout to improve access to sources while maintaining the convenience of its answers.

Google is also expanding its partnerships with publishers. According to the company, more than 400 publishers have joined the "News AI" pilot program announced last December. The program operates on a licensing model that compensates publishers for providing and enabling the use of enhanced content, and includes features such as "In-Depth Article Overviews" on Google News publisher pages.
