On-Device AI Works Inside Your PC

The era of using AI on your computer without an internet connection has begun. 'On-device AI,' in which dedicated semiconductor chips (NPUs and GPUs) built into devices handle tasks at the level of large language models, has officially taken root in consumer PCs and mobile environments as global companies such as Nvidia and Apple commercialize the technology. Users can now leverage AI regardless of network conditions, with no risk of personal information or confidential corporate documents leaking to the outside.

Conventional generative AI required questions and files to be sent to data centers packed with thousands of servers before receiving an answer. It would immediately go down when the network was unstable, and there were also concerns that confidential internal documents could be left behind on external servers.

Concrete moves differ by company. Nvidia has dramatically expanded an ecosystem of ultra-lightweight assistants that run without internet on AI PCs equipped with RTX graphics cards, including standard desktops. Apple, leveraging its latest M4 silicon lineup, has completed a local privacy engine that processes personal data entirely on the device without sending it to the cloud.

Because data never leaves the device, the technology carries great significance for office workers wary of corporate leaks and consumers who value personal privacy. Even in financial firms and manufacturing research environments where security policies restrict the use of external AI chatbots, local AI tools can now be used without a network connection.

However, because on-device AI operates separately from the internet, tasks that require searching for new external information—such as real-time news or the latest legal amendments—remain impossible. Since it reasons only from previously trained data and files users upload directly, its limitations are clear for work that demands real-time search.
