Hyundai Motor to Challenge Tesla with Autonomous Driving on a Similar Scale

Hyundai Motor Group is reviewing plans to apply autonomous driving technology to its new hybrid vehicles, challenging Tesla by building an autonomous driving system of comparable scale. Autonomous driving, a technology that allows vehicles to perceive their surroundings and drive on their own, is a key competitive battleground for the automotive industry. This direction was laid out in the 15th installment of the 'Beyond EVs Toward the Mobility Revolution' series. The core of the approach is to expand the scope of autonomous driving technology beyond electric vehicles to hybrids as well. If autonomous driving is applied to new hybrid models, Hyundai Motor Group is analyzed to be able to build an autonomous driving system on the same scale as Tesla's.

This series has covered LG Group's expansion of its business portfolio 'from muscle to brain' in its bid to lead the physical AI market. Samsung Electronics was also introduced as pursuing physical AI as part of its effort to achieve a 'second semiconductor legend.'

Hyundai Motor Group's push to expand autonomous driving can be seen not merely as an individual technology strategy but as one axis of the competition among Korea's major conglomerates for leadership in mobility and AI technology.
