Pentagon Weighs Using AI Chatbots for Military Target Decisions
The U.S. Department of Defense is exploring the use of generative AI chatbots to prioritize military targets. A defense official revealed that generative AI could be employed to rank target lists and recommend strike priorities, with the aim of significantly reducing the time it takes to select targets.
Since 2017, the Pentagon has used the "Maven" big data project to analyze data and identify targets through computer vision technology. Generative AI is expected to be added as a conversational chatbot layer to this system, accelerating decision-making. Models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok could be integrated into this process, and both companies have already secured contracts to use their models within the Pentagon's classified environment.
However, the Department of Defense will maintain its principle that human review and approval are mandatory for AI-generated recommendations. Human reviewers will be responsible for the final confirmation and evaluation of the AI's analyses and suggestions.
