Trump-Backed Voter ID Bill Stalled in Senate Amid GOP Opposition

A voter ID bill championed by former President Donald Trump, known as the SAVE Act, is facing an uncertain path to passage as it heads to a Senate floor vote on Tuesday, hampered by internal Republican opposition and a lack of momentum for a procedural maneuver.

Senate Republican Leader John Thune plans to bring the bill to a vote on Tuesday afternoon, but despite pressure from Trump and conservative factions, he is opting against using a "talking filibuster." This decision stems from a recognition that the party lacks sufficient internal support for that approach. Senator Rick Scott admitted that Republicans currently "don't have the votes for the talking filibuster," and Thune, citing the need for realistic outcomes, hinted at the arithmetic challenges of passing the bill.

Democrats have made their opposition to the bill clear, vowing to block its passage in the Senate. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer stated he will not allow Trump's bill to pass and will let voters judge it at the ballot box.

The bill's passage remains uncertain due to opposition from some Republican senators. Senator Thom Tillis has vowed to use all available means to block the legislation, and Senator Lisa Murkowski has previously voiced her opposition.
