AI Emerges as Core of Defense Innovation, Debated in National Assembly

On the 24th, a meeting of the National Assembly's National Defense Committee saw discussions on concrete measures to innovate defense systems using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and link them with advanced industries. AI was spotlighted as a key element determining victory or defeat on future battlefields, and plans to swiftly apply technology and improve related systems were examined to respond to the rapidly changing warfighting environment.

The session addressed strategies to bolster defense industry competitiveness through the integration of advanced technologies and civil-military cooperation. The proliferation of AI technology and the advancement of cutting-edge tech were discussed as major agenda items for the defense sector.

Members of the National Defense Committee, including Chairman Sung Il-jong, participated in the discussions. Committee members confirmed policy support measures to facilitate the introduction of AI technology into the defense sector. The committee reviewed institutional improvements necessary for applying AI technology in response to changes in the battlefield environment, and the operational status of civil-military cooperation systems aimed at securing the competitiveness of the defense industry was also included as a key focus of inspection.
