North Korea Claims Success in New Solid-Fuel Rocket Engine Test

North Korea announced it has successfully tested a new solid-fuel rocket engine capable of striking the US mainland. The test involved a high-thrust engine made of carbon fiber composite materials, presented as part of an effort to enhance national strategic strike capabilities under North Korea's new five-year defense plan, according to state media. KCNA reported that the tested engine produced 2,500 kilonewtons (kN) of thrust, a higher figure than a similar engine tested last year, suggesting it could power more mobile or miniaturized long-range missiles. Leader Kim Jong Un reportedly assessed the test as "greatly significant in raising the nation's strategic military power to the highest level." However, some experts have questioned the reliability of the test results, citing the lack of disclosure on key information such as the engine's total burn time. Solid-fuel rocket systems have advantages over liquid-fuel missiles, including shorter launch preparation times and higher survivability due to being harder to detect, and are considered a factor that could advance North Korea's ballistic missile threats.

Kim Jong Un's recent military activities extend beyond this engine test. He has been observed observing special operations drills and testing new main battle tanks, demonstrating efforts to modernize conventional forces in addition to its missile programs. KCNA reported that Kim claimed the new tank's defense system could repel almost all existing anti-tank weapons.

These intensified military activities are an extension of North Korea's military moves in recent years. Following the collapse of diplomacy with then-US President Donald Trump in 2019, North Korea has accelerated the development of its nuclear weapons and missile systems despite international sanctions. Pyongyang has maintained a stance that it remains open to dialogue if the United States withdraws its denuclearization demands.
