Minjoo Party Seoul Mayoral Hopefuls Clash Over Policies in Joint Debate
Three preliminary candidates for Seoul Mayor from the Democratic Party of Korea clashed over transportation and real estate policies at a joint debate held on the 31st. The candidates also revealed differing stances on a proposal by Lee Jae-myung concerning 'research on limiting free subway rides for those aged 65 and over'.
Candidate Jeon Hyun-hee expressed sympathy with the proposal's intent but voiced concerns about potential increases in congestion during rush hours. Candidate Park Ju-min stated his understanding of the proposal was to encourage public transportation use and alleviate congestion amidst an energy crisis. Candidate Jung Won-oh advocated for maintaining the free subway ride policy for seniors, suggesting voluntary participation incentives rather than restrictions from the government or Seoul city.
The three candidates also debated real estate policies. Jeon Hyun-hee criticized Jung Won-oh's pledge to supply 'practical apartments' as unrealistic, while Jung countered that it was a demand-responsive measure with ways to lower construction costs. Park Ju-min presented housing supply plans including accessible housing, improved speed for redevelopment/reconstruction permits, and support via citizen funds.
