Yeosu Mayoral Candidate Jeong Gi-myeong Pledges Public Ferry Operation for Island Residents

Jeong Gi-myeong, a preliminary candidate for Yeosu Mayor from the Democratic Party, pledged on the 7th to introduce a 'public ferry operation system' to resolve maritime transport inconveniences in Yeosu's island regions. The candidate explained the background of his pledge as the reality of island residents' fundamental right to mobility being infringed upon due to repeated cases of private ferry operators ceasing operations because of accumulated deficits.

Candidate Jeong emphasized that ferries are not merely a means of transport for island residents but are their sole passageway and akin to a lifeline. He stated that he would promptly establish a win-win model, including public operation, to ensure residents' right to mobility is not sacrificed by the management logic of private ferry companies. As follow-up measures to minimize conflict, he added that he would focus on amending ordinances, securing budgets, and maintaining continuous communication with ferry operators and local residents.

Candidate Jeong also presented a legal basis. He stated that since ferries were included in the category of public transportation through a related legal amendment in 2020, the city can directly engage in operations to create a stable operating environment.
