YouTuber Jeon Han-gil Faces Arrest Warrant Application for Defamation Charges Against Lee Jae-myung and Lee Jun-seok
Arrest warrant has been sought for Jeon Han-gil, a former Korean history instructor turned YouTuber, on charges of defamation against Lee Jae-myung and Lee Jun-seok, leader of the Reform Party. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency applied for the warrant against Jeon on charges including defamation by false information under the Information and Communications Network Act. Jeon is scheduled to appear at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on the 13th at 2 PM for a pre-warrant application investigation by the prosecution, before a decision is made on the warrant request.
Jeon was accused and reported for allegedly making false claims about President Lee Jae-myung on his YouTube channel and for raising questionable allegations about Lee Jun-seok's academic background. On January 18th, he claimed that 'President Lee Jae-myung handed over 160 trillion won in slush funds and military secrets to China,' and on January 27th, he raised doubts about Lee's Harvard University degree based on past election campaign literature.
Jeon has been investigated three times by the police since last month. Upon arrival at the police station on February 1st, he stated, 'If there is something wrong, they can request a correction, but it is uncharacteristic of a politician to abuse accusations and reports,' adding, 'I hope for freedom of the press to be fully guaranteed.'
