70-Year-Old Becomes Judicial Scrivener After 30 Years of Pursuit

At the age of 70, Han Sang-beom has achieved his long-held dream by passing the judicial scrivener exam after 30 years of tenacious effort. A judicial scrivener is a professional who drafts documents for submission to courts or prosecutors' offices and assists with legal matters.

His challenge, which began with passing the first stage of the bar exam in 1985 as he prepared for a second act in life, has now borne fruit. After passing the first stage of the bar exam in 1985, he harbored expectations for the judicial scrivener exam, but he struggled for a long period, repeatedly failing the test throughout his 30s. During this process, his family relationships even became strained, to the point where his middle-school son told him, 'This is your mother's house, so don't come here,' shaking the foundation of his home.

He put his dream on hold temporarily, working as a paralegal to make a living, but he had to leave his job at the age of 56. After stabilizing his livelihood by passing the administrative agent exam at 60, he revisited his long-held dream of becoming a legal professional and took on the judicial scrivener exam.

Finally, in 2024, at the age of 70, he held the passing certificate. He proved to himself that even when one thinks it's too late in the 100-year lifespan era, one can still succeed if they find a way. Han understood the reasons for his past failures while preparing for the judicial scrivener exam for nearly 30 years. Leveraging the idea that one's 60s are the best time to study and employing an unconventional study method, he passed the judicial scrivener exam, which has a pass rate of about 10%, at the age of 70. Having acquired three certifications – real estate agent, administrative agent, and now judicial scrivener – he now views exams not as a source of fear, but as a process to prove his potential. Currently, he has opened his own judicial scrivener office and continues to study, pioneering specialized areas that are difficult for others to handle.
