Half of New Orleans Playgrounds Found with Lead Contamination Exceeding Standards

Approximately half of New Orleans' public playgrounds have been found to be contaminated with lead above safety limits. Lead is a heavy metal detrimental to children's health and development, heightening concerns over the safety of play areas frequented by children.

Last February, Verite News reporters inspected over 80 playgrounds citywide. The findings showed lead levels considered unsafe by experts in 50% of these locations. One park recorded lead concentrations around 6,000 ppm, 30 times the EPA's recommended screening level.

Over 90% of housing structures in New Orleans were built before 1978, when lead-based paint was banned for residential use.

Children under the age of six are particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can have severe impacts on their growth and brain development. Experts state that very high levels of lead poisoning can be fatal.
