Loneliness May Drive Memory Decline

According to a recently published study, older adults who frequently experience loneliness may face a more rapid decline in memory. This underscores the importance of managing loneliness to prevent the deterioration of cognitive functions, such as thinking and remembering.

Researchers from Colombia, Spain, and Sweden tracked over 10,000 European adults aged 65 to 94 for seven years to examine changes in their memory. The findings revealed that participants who reported higher levels of loneliness scored lower on memory tests at the beginning of the study. Those exhibiting high loneliness across three questions measuring the degree of their loneliness had lower baseline scores on both immediate and delayed recall tests. Approximately 8% of participants at the time reported high levels of loneliness, and they were generally more likely to be older, female, or suffer from conditions like depression.

Over the seven-year follow-up period, the rate of memory decline was similar regardless of loneliness levels. This suggests that while loneliness may not accelerate the progression of memory loss, it could be associated with lower overall cognitive performance. The researchers analyzed these results to indicate that loneliness might play a more pronounced role in the initial state of memory function, having a greater impact early on rather than accelerating gradual decline. Dr. Luis Carlos Venegas-Sanabria, the study's lead author, stated that it was surprising loneliness significantly impacted memory but did not affect the speed of memory decline over time. He added that this suggests loneliness has a greater effect on the initial state of cognitive function.
