Government and Local Authorities Step In to Stabilize Prices Amidst Rising Grocery Costs
Rising food prices, driven by instability in the Middle East and surging international oil prices, are placing a growing burden on consumers' grocery baskets.
In response, the central government and local municipalities have prepared a variety of discount events to stimulate consumer spending and stabilize living costs, coinciding with Family Month. The government, Nonghyup (National Agricultural Cooperative Federation), and livestock producer organizations are participating in these 'Family Month' discount campaigns.
Major supermarkets nationwide will offer discounts of up to 30% on various cuts of Korean beef and pork, and up to 40% on eggs and chicken through the end of May. The official online mall for Korean pork, 'Handon Mall,' is selling 2kg of pork belly and neck at half price until mid-next month.
In the Cheongju region, vegetables such as tomatoes, paprika, and onions are available at prices nearly 20% lower than usual. Chungcheongbuk-do Province is offering discounts on over 250 items on its official online shopping mall 'On Chungbuk,' and over 400 items at its small and medium-sized enterprise exhibition and sale events, with discounts of up to 60%. Online malls in various cities and counties, including Eumseong Market and Goesan Market, are offering discounts of up to 50% on local agricultural and specialty products, with public-private cooperation aimed at easing the burden of food costs.
