A former detective has raised concerns that investigators may have missed the suspect in the murder of Chandra Levy, who went missing in Washington D.C. in 2001, due to insufficient early evidence gathering. Former D.C. detective Ted Williams pointed out that a lack of early, thorough searches of a specific area in Rock Creek Park may have hampered investigators' ability to secure crucial physical evidence.

Chandra Levy, a 24-year-old intern, disappeared in May 2001, a case that garnered national attention that year. Levy, originally from California, was interning at the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She was last seen on April 30, 2001, at a gym near her apartment in Washington D.C. Investigators tracked her internet usage the following morning, confirming she was alive at that time.

Levy's remains were discovered in a secluded area of Rock Creek Park over a year after her disappearance, in May 2002, a development that significantly shifted the investigation. An undocumented immigrant with a history of assault and rape was identified as a suspect.

Levy's parents contacted D.C. police and then-Congressman Gary Condit of California on May 6, 2001. Condit was later implicated in a romantic relationship with the missing Levy. The scandal impacted Condit's political career, and he lost his party's primary election in 2002. Williams stated that he does not believe Condit was directly involved in Levy's disappearance.
