South Korea-China Relations: Challenges Ahead After Recovery
Late last year and early this year, the leaders of South Korea and China exchanged visits, declaring a 'full restoration' of relations. However, follow-up actions have been slow, requiring continuous management of the relationship. It is a critical juncture to address the pending issues following the recovery of bilateral ties.
Kim Han-kwon, a professor at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, analyzed that the holding of high-level meetings after the US-China summit will be an important gauge for future South Korea-China relations. Issues such as the removal of structures in the West Sea, the possibility of closer ties between North Korea, China, and Russia on the occasion of Russia's Victory Day, and the Taiwan issue amidst US-China competition could serve as obstacles to bilateral relations.
Both countries are emphasizing practical cooperation and relationship improvement, maintaining a 'management mode' rather than expressing sharp conflicts.
