Assisted Dying Bill Scrapped Over Safety Fears

On April 24, 2026, the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was discarded in Parliament as the legislative deadline expired. The bill was a private member's bill introduced by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater.

While the bill received a majority of votes in the House of Commons, it stalled in the House of Lords due to serious concerns over a lack of effective safeguards.

Recent polls indicated high public support for the principle of assisted dying, but support for the bill was lower due to concerns about the absence of robust safety measures. The bill was not included in the government's manifesto. In a recent survey, only 41% of respondents indicated they would vote for the bill again if it were reintroduced, with 45% maintaining their opposition.

The debate surrounding assisted dying is expected to continue.
