Academy Excludes AI-Generated Works from Awards Consideration, Recognizes Only Human Performances
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the organizer of the US Academy Awards, has finalized new regulations that exclude AI-written screenplays from award consideration. For the screenplay categories, only scripts authored by humans will be subject to review.
In the acting categories, only roles performed by humans, credited in the official cast list, and with the actor's consent will be included for consideration.
The Academy has not outright prohibited the use of AI in film production but will assess the level of human creative contribution when AI is utilized, allowing it to influence nominations.
Furthermore, the Academy has revised the regulations for the International Feature Film category, deciding to include films that have won awards at major international film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, and Busan, even if they were not selected by their respective countries' official committees.
