Somali Pirates, Houthi-Aligned Forces Hijack Oil Tanker, Threatening $1 Trillion Shipping Route
Somali pirates and Houthi-aligned forces in Yemen have hijacked an oil tanker, steering it toward the Gulf of Aden, escalating threats to the security of the $1 trillion annual oil trade route. This incident amplifies concerns over maritime security gaps across the Red Sea region.
Ido Shalev, COO of RTCOM Defense, analyzed the event as an 'opportunistic collaboration,' where Houthi forces provide geopolitical support, advanced GPS, and surveillance technology, while Somali groups handle field operations and skiff deployment. This represents a coordinated attack level rarely seen in a decade, with pirates reportedly seizing the vessel, oil worth tens of millions of dollars, and the entire crew before demanding ransom. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) raised the risk level in Somali waters to 'significant' as of April 21, with at least three vessels reported hijacked or attacked in recent days.
