Amsterdam Bans Meat, Fossil Fuel Ads in Carbon Neutrality Push

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has fully banned advertisements for meat and fossil fuels in public spaces starting May 1, 2026, as part of its plan to achieve 'zero' carbon emissions by 2050 and halve meat consumption. This measure aligns with the city government's climate agenda to achieve carbon neutrality and reduce meat consumption by 2050. The ban will apply to billboards, tram stops, and subway stations.

Critics have labeled this policy an overreach, attempting to manipulate personal choices, while the Dutch meat association argues the ban will have an undesirable impact on consumer behavior. Representatives from the Dutch travel industry pointed out that a ban on airline advertisements would disproportionately hit businesses.

In the past, when cigarette advertising was prevalent, football legend Johan Cruyff also worked as a model for cigarette ads before dying of lung cancer. There is a view that advertising dead animals on billboards is not normal today, and some argue that this change is positive.

Other Dutch cities have introduced or are pursuing similar advertising restrictions, and movements to curb fossil fuel advertising are continuing across Europe. The U.S. federal government is taking a different approach to food policy. Earlier this year, the Department of Health and Human Services released updated dietary guidelines in an inverted pyramid shape, with meat, fats, fruits, and vegetables making up the largest portions, and whole grains the narrowest.
