Samsung Electronics Union Faces Deepening Internal Conflict Ahead of Strike

Samsung Electronics' union is experiencing escalating internal conflict as employees in the non-semiconductor (DX) division voice growing discontent over the focus on demands from the semiconductor (DS) division during preparations for a full-scale strike. This highlights a fracture in the unity of the three unions formed last November for wage negotiations. Over 70% of the 73,306 members of the super-union belong to the DS division, and DX division employees have consistently raised complaints that the union's operations and negotiation demands are being tailored to the DS sector. Currently, the union's top demands for the DS division are 'payment of 15% of operating profit' and 'permanent abolition of performance bonus caps'.

Industry observers view the union's internal cohesion as a crucial variable for future negotiations, as significant as whether a full strike will actually materialize. In a situation where interests differ by business division, if the perception grows that the majority union is biased towards the voices of a specific sector, both the union's negotiating power and representativeness could be undermined. While the Samsung Electronics Union has rapidly expanded its membership, it has yet to bridge the gap in interests between its various business divisions. If the majority union appears to be excluding the voices of other unions or specific business units, legitimacy debates could escalate.

Samsung Electronics' union has announced a strike from May 21st to June 7th, lasting 18 days. If the internal conflict materializes into a full-scale strike, it could lead to significant company losses due to production disruptions, while also substantially impacting the union's representativeness and future negotiating power.
