Rep. Lee So-young Opposes Special Prosecutor Bill's Indictment Withdrawal Power
Rep. Lee So-young of the Democratic Party of Korea has publicly expressed opposition to the special prosecutor's power to withdraw indictments, as outlined in the 'Special Prosecutor Act for the Truth Investigation of Fabricated Investigations and Prosecutions,' sparking controversy over the bill's provisions. Lee added that she would make further remarks after deeper deliberation on the matter.
Appearing on YTN Radio, Lee suggested that the issue is contentious from legal theoretical and other perspectives. While she sympathized with the need to pursue a special prosecutor, she pointed out insufficient internal deliberation on the specific content of the bill.
Lee emphasized, 'Public opinion must also be sufficiently gathered on issues like this, and there are bound to be debates among lawmakers.' She added, 'I do not believe everyone agrees.' The Democratic Party postponed the bill's processing until after the June 3rd local elections amid ongoing backlash over the prosecutorial withdrawal clause following the bill's introduction.
