In April, the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.6% from the previous month, marking a 3.8% increase compared to the same month last year.

The energy index increased by 3.8% in April, while the shelter index rose 0.6% and the food index climbed 0.5%. Compared to market expectations compiled by Yonhap News, only the month-on-month inflation rate for the overall CPI met forecasts; other components, including core CPI, exceeded expectations. The month-on-month increase in core CPI was 0.4%, the first time it has exceeded 0.4% since January 2025. The year-on-year increase in the overall CPI for all items in April was the highest in three years since May 2023.

According to the Department of Labor, the rise in the energy index accounted for over 40% of the overall CPI's monthly increase in April, and the shelter index also continued its upward trend, contributing to price hikes.
