High School Student Murder Suspect's Identity Leaked, Reigniting Private Sanction Debate

Personal information of suspect Jang, accused in the Gwangju high school student murder case, was leaked via social network services (SNS) before any legal procedures, reigniting controversy over 'private sanctions' where individuals take it upon themselves to disclose identities. Jang's graduation photo, face, age, and alma mater, which were slated for official disclosure after deliberation, were circulated on SNS first.

It has become a recurring pattern for 'private sanctions' to occur without waiting for legal procedures when heinous crimes are committed. The spread of such information raises concerns as it can inflict secondary damage on innocent individuals unrelated to the crime, as well as the perpetrator's family and acquaintances.

Experts point out that such private sanctions constitute another crime and can lead to the creation of more victims. Concerns have been raised that the atmosphere of consuming suspects as online content could undermine the rule of law. While acknowledging public anger, experts advise that society must deeply consider measures to resolve the 'distrust in the judicial system,' which is the root cause of private sanctions. They suggest that the phenomenon of indiscriminate private sanctions could decrease when justice is realized through judicial procedures based on confirmed facts.
