China has approved the world's first brain-computer interface (BCI) chip that is surgically implanted for human use. This technology enables the control of computers and machines using only thoughts.

The chip is designed to help patients with quadriplegia due to spinal cord injury restore bodily functions by utilizing brain signals. Developed collaboratively by Shanghai-based startup Neuralink Technology and researchers from Tsinghua University in Beijing, the device has been named 'NEURO'. NEURO is a coin-sized device where sensors that detect brain activity are implanted on the dura mater, the outermost membrane covering the brain.

Dong Hui, who became paralyzed from the neck down after a traffic accident six years ago, succeeded in picking up a pen and writing his name after 11 months of rehabilitation training. After training with the NEURO chip, Dong Hui shared his feelings at the time, saying, "I couldn't believe I could write again. I was so happy I almost missed a stroke." Dong Hui is currently continuing his training at home with the goal of independently performing daily tasks such as dressing and eating.

The NEURO chip is suitable for patients aged 18 to 60 who have quadriplegia due to spinal cord injury and retain some residual function in their arms. The China National Medical Products Administration has approved the chip for use in actual patients beyond clinical trials, stating that this product is the first invasive BCI product to be applied in practice beyond clinical trials. Neuralink Technology has conducted 36 clinical trials using NEURO since October last year.

China's approval of the BCI chip signifies a breakthrough in brain-computer interface technology, demonstrating its potential for application in actual patient treatment.
