Yong Hye-in, Born in 1990, Nominated as Youngest-Ever Gender Equality and Family Minister

On the 30th, Basic Income Party Rep. Yong Hye-in, 36, was nominated as the candidate for Minister of Gender Equality and Family. If appointed, Yong will become the first minister born in the 1990s and the youngest minister in the nation's constitutional history.

A two-term lawmaker in her 30s and a 'working mom,' she served as a standing co-representative during the party's founding in 2020. She was subsequently elected to both the 21st and 22nd National Assemblies via proportional representation and currently serves as the Basic Income Party's floor leader. During the last presidential election, Yong served as co-chair of the Democratic Party's central election campaign committee.

Yong first gained prominence in 2014 by proposing the 'Be Quiet' silent march to mourn the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster. In 2020, she founded the Basic Income Party, advocating for a monthly universal basic income of 600,000 won for all citizens. That same year, she joined the Together Citizens Party, a proportional representation alliance led by the Democratic Party, marking her entry into mainstream politics.

In 2021, she made headlines when she brought her two-month-old son to the National Assembly.

Following her nomination, Yong pledged to strengthen the ministry’s core functions and implement gender equality policies that bring tangible changes to people's daily lives.
