Tongyeong Mayoral Race Tarnished by Candidate Smear Campaigns and Accusations
The Tongyeong mayoral election ahead of the 6th National Simultaneous Local Elections is showing a murky trend, with the People Power Party's candidate Chun Young-ki and the Democratic Party's candidate Kang Seok-ju exchanging accusations and filing complaints against each other.
The Democratic Party's candidate Kang Seok-ju's camp criticized the People Power Party's candidate Chun Young-ki's camp for distributing a false press release titled 'Arrested in the act for illegal money envelopes,' causing confusion among citizens. They also pointed out that Chun's camp's announcement labeling suspicions about Kang's son's private life, reported by local media, as a 'political operation orchestrated by the Kang camp' was also a dissemination of false information.
Kang's camp has defined the raising of vote-buying suspicions as false information and filed a complaint with the police against Chun for violating the Public Official Election Act. Kang's camp argued that it is proper for Chun to kneel before the citizens of Tongyeong, apologize, and then resign from his candidacy.
