Senate Blocks Trump-Backed Election Bill
An election and voter integrity bill championed by former U.S. President Donald Trump failed to pass the Senate, missing its chance to be included in a budget reconciliation package. The bill, known as the 'SAVE America Act,' did not secure the necessary 60 votes for passage. The decisive factor in its defeat was opposition from all Democratic senators and four Republican senators. This marked the second attempt by Republicans to attach the SAVE America Act to a budget reconciliation package, and both efforts failed.
Senator Lindsey Graham argued that there was no reason for Democrats to oppose the SAVE America Act, suggesting it could encourage election fraud. In contrast, Senator Alex Padilla pointed out that voting by non-citizens is already illegal and stated the amendment was akin to an attempt by the Trump administration to seize control of elections and ban mail-in voting.
The repeated rejection of the SAVE America Act highlights the division within American politics. It suggests that issues of voter ID and election integrity face an uphill battle for momentum amidst ideological conflict.
