South Korea Leads Development of International Standards for AI and 6G Information Security
South Korea has achieved leading results in the development of international standards for next-generation information security areas, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 6G mobile communications. The nation secured these achievements by leading the approval of 14 new standardization items at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) Study Group 17 (SG17) international meeting, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from April 1st to 10th.
The meeting was attended by approximately 477 experts from 60 member countries worldwide. South Korea dispatched a delegation of 59 experts from industry, academia, and research institutes, engaging in discussions to incorporate a total of 64 domestic information security technologies into international standards. Notably, the South Korean delegation included representatives from multiple companies to reflect their proprietary technologies. Based on these companies' technical capabilities, 14 new standardization items were approved, including frameworks for multimodal AI security and requirements for 6G network security technologies.
Furthermore, seven items, such as AI system security requirements that South Korea has proactively developed, received pre-approval. Six international standards and two technical reports, addressing threats like software supply chain security, were also granted final approval.
This accomplishment demonstrates South Korea's leadership in crucial future security technologies including AI, 6G, digital identity, and supply chain security. In particular, the 6G security standards are expected to serve as important data for the future selection of 6G candidate technologies.
