AI Era Insurance: Experts Stress 'Solidarity' as Core, Urge 'Joint Response' to New Challenges

The consensus among international scholars is that insurance's fundamental nature remains 'solidarity' despite the proliferation of AI, and that AI risks necessitate a joint response from both public and private sectors.

Professor Arthur Charpentier of Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) explained that insurance is based on the principle of 'solidarity,' extending beyond mere statistics and prediction. He argued that excessive personalization of insurance could undermine social cohesion and stressed the need for a system where everyone can receive insurance benefits fairly. He urged regulatory authorities to consider various policy measures that preserve the principle of insurance solidarity, rather than focusing solely on eliminating variables.

Professor Luo Jia of Peking University stated that AI will bring irreversible changes to the insurance market and that insurers must establish expert advisory systems. He emphasized that systemic risks like AI risks should be borne by society as a whole, underscoring the importance of collaborative structures between the public and private sectors. Professor Luo Jia believes that as AI risks are in their early stages, they can gradually become insurable through data accumulation and knowledge sharing. He proposed that insurers, reinsurers, and capital markets must collectively develop new solutions for AI risks.

International scholars asserted that even in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), the fundamental value of insurance, 'solidarity,' must be preserved, and that the public and private sectors should cooperate to jointly address the new systemic risks arising from AI. These discussions took place during the '2026 International Workshop on Risk & Insurance,' hosted by the Korea Insurance Research Institute on May 29, 2026, with participants including Son Jae-hee, a research fellow at the Korea Insurance Research Institute, Arthur Charpentier, professor at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), and Luo Jia, professor at Peking University.
