Samsung Electro-Mechanics is joining forces with Japan's Sumitomo Chemical Group to establish a joint venture named 'Glassm' for key glass substrate materials.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics decided to establish Glassm, a joint venture for the manufacturing and sales of glass cores – the key material for glass substrates – to respond to the growing demand from global big tech companies. Glass substrates are in line with next-generation semiconductor technology trends due to their lower coefficient of thermal expansion and superior flatness compared to conventional plastic substrates.

The joint venture will be established with a total investment of 480 billion won. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will hold a 66% stake, while Dongwoo Fine-Chem, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical Group, will invest 34%. The production base will be located within Dongwoo Fine-Chem's Pyeongtaek facility in Gyeonggi Province.

Both companies plan to complete the establishment of the corporation within the year. Following the construction of production facilities and process stabilization, they aim to commence full-scale glass core production in the second half of 2027.
